How Madonna defeated younger pop rivals as new album tops the charts

After more than four decades in the music industry, Madonna is proving that she’s still the Queen of Pop.

The 67-year-old’s new album Confessions II has just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 134,000 copies, exceeding its initial sales predictions.

The disc is Madonna’s tenth No. 1 album, putting her in the same category as Taylor Swift, The Beatles, and Drake as just one of four acts to have ten or more No. 1s on both the Billboard 200 and H๏τ 100. 

Confessions II also managed to fend off stiff compeтιтion from Olivia Rodrigo’s record-breaking new album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, which slipped to No. 2 with 103,000 copies. 

On top of that, Madonna beat rising superstar Sienna Spiro, 20, whose debut album Visitor arrived at a disappointing No. 9 on the Billboard 200 despite a string of streaming hits on Spotify. 

Madonna was able to defeat her younger pop rivals thanks to the strength of her physical album sales, with her first-week total consisting of 114,000 pure album sales and just 19,000 in streaming-equivalent units.

The album, which has received rave reviews from critics, is the 67-year-old’s tenth No. 1

This proves that Madonna’s loyal fanbase were more than willing to fork out full price for her album instead of just streaming it for free. 

In an emotional post on social media, the Material Girl admitted that she was ‘grateful and surprised’ by the ‘incredible reception’ that Confessions II has received.

‘Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this and who has helped make this dream come true. Especially my fans. The goodwill and positivity has been incredible. I’m still pinching myself. I can’t believe it’s # 1 all around the world,’ she gushed. 

‘My dream was to make people dance this summer!! To bring people JOY! Dreams do come true. Thanks and love!’

Confessions II also debuted at No. 1 in the UK, making Madonna the first American female artist to chart a number one album in the country across five decades. 

In addition to its strong first-week sales, Confessions II has also been boosted by rave reviews from critics.  

According to review aggregators like Metacritic, Confessions II is already one of the most critically-acclaimed pop releases of 2026.

Daily Mail’s own Adrian Thrills gave the album four out of five stars, calling it ‘uniformly excellent’ and a return to the star’s musical roots.

‘By drawing from her past, both personally and musically, Madonna has made her most vital album in over two decades. This grande dame still knows how to make us move,’ wrote NME.

‘After a long and anxious seven-year wait, Madonna finally plugs back into her clubland roots with a record of shamanic force,’ gushed Mojo. 

‘If it’s not quite as good as Confessions on a Dance Floor, it’s unequivocally Madonna’s best album since Confessions on a Dance Floor,’ wrote The Guardian.

BBC said that the record ‘comes close’ to being as good as the original Confessions On a Dance Floor, adding that ‘the first 30 minutes are impeccable’.

Confessions II was largely produced by Stuart Price, who was behind 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor and Madonna’s mega hit Hung Up. 

Other collaborators on the new record include Martin Garrix, Cirkut, Arca, and Tainy.

There’s also a surprising guest feature from Madonna’s own daughter Lourdes ‘Lola’ Leon on the emotional track The Test.

Madonna herself also co-wrote and co-produced each song on the album, with critics hailing Confessions II as one of the most personal records of her career.
